Doing it Differently
Level Ten Landworks
Lisa Coates dared to do things differently by stepping out and starting her own general contracting firm in a predominately white male industry.
Lisa is the founder and president of Halifax-based Level Ten Landworks - in an industry that she loves but which is not always the first choice for women. Her career journey has taken her from traveling North America as a bartender to living in Massachusetts as a real estate agent. Lisa's perseverance took her from her first sale of a mobile home to quickly rising up the socioeconomic scale to find herself in the multi-million dollar home market. The 2008 market collapse was a wake up call for Lisa and after a couple of years of riding out the crash, Lisa found herself looking to what was happening in the Halifax real estate market and eventually relocated in hopes to provide herself with a more balanced lifestyle.
Lisa soon realized her real dream was in 'building things', something she had seen her grandfather do when she was a child, so she reached out to CEED (Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development) to help realize that dream. After two and a half years as a local entrepreneur, Lisa has no regrets and her willingness to share in her mistakes and hard lessons learned reflect her authentic fight back spirit.
